![]() ![]() In the ESP sim (FSX-> P3d) world, this included hardware drivers, weather injection programs, EFB’s, moving map software, etc. A good number of these auxiliary applications are designed to run simultaneously with the sim. We would venture to bet that most flightsim users operate and maintain serveral auxiliary applications in addition to their main sim platform. Likely, our next simulation computer will be AMD technology. Time for the next round of computer migrations for us, too. Our current system (Intel i9-9900KF, overclocked as mentioned) is 5 years old. While evaluating our options regarding graphics cards, we also investigated AMD CPU/MB hardware. Perhaps, because the XBox system is based on AMD technology, we as PC users are seeing collateral benefit. We have mentioned the MSFS/XBox connection a couple of times. One potential positive for us as hardware purchasers is MSFS seems to be more hardware agnostic, both CPU and GPU-wise, than the ESP sims. In the meanwhile, AMD has made some significant performance and power management improvements in their products. We have been a Nvidia/EVGA fanboi for a decade, but the last couple of years in the graphics card marketplace (and recent events in the Nvidia ecosystem) have given us a good deal of heartburn. We are taking this “opportunity” to try out an AMD 6800XT graphics card. ![]() As a result, we are spared the consternation of the MS server moves. After 5 years of continuous use in an overclocked system, the GTX1080 FTW started overheating when doing any graphics process more intense than MS Excel. Yesterday, the fans went out on the graphics card in our simulation computer. Of course, as a user who always flies with “live” weather, it would be a gripe except for…. This is probably a relatively small issue resulting from what is probably a herculean IT process. It is now about 36 hours since the planned move and there are some reports that “live” weather is broken for many folks. This is a pretty big deal considering the mass of backend horsepower being applied to service the users. A few days ago, MS announced a planned server move for the MSFS content delivery services. ![]()
